1917 Harrison Fire

The fire took everything

The aftermath

On July 21, 1917, Harrison, Idaho, was a thriving mill town with a population of around 1,200. The next day, a devastating fire ignited at the Grant Lumber Company and rapidly consumed much of the town. Fueled by high winds, the blaze destroyed approximately 30 residences, sawmills, and the entire business district. The town's wooden structures, including sidewalks and buildings, were particularly vulnerable, leading to a swift and overwhelming destruction.

In the aftermath, many residents and business owners faced profound loss. Some chose not to rebuild, while others, determined to restore the town's spirit, constructed new fire-resistant brick buildings. By 1918, six such brick structures lined the main street, forming what is now known as the Harrison Commercial Historic District. Despite these efforts, the town never fully regained its former size or prominence. However, the resilience and determination of its people ensured that Harrison endured, preserving its rich history and community spirit.

Charlie & his dream

Charlie Jenicek was born in Rozmital, Czechoslovakia in 1901, emigrating with his family to America in 1904 and eventually arriving in Harrison in 1912. After years of working on the family farm, logging and working for the highway district he fulfilled his dream in 1952 of purchasing the then Oasis Tavern, later becoming known as One Shot Charlie’s.

Stories vary on what prompted the name change but they all revolve around his very generous pour of a “shot”. OSC became a gathering place for locals & guests worldwide. If anyone has heard of Harrison, Idaho, chances are they’ve been to One Shot Charlie’s.

Charlie passed in 1986 leaving behind a legacy of friendship, hospitality, history & community, preserved lovingly by current owner Whitney Hruza.

Leveling up

Turning a landmark into a community

Hi Harrison Community

When I took over One Shot Charlies in 2012, I knew I wasn’t just running a restaurant — I was stepping into a legacy. Charlie’s story, the spirit of this building, and the strength of this town means everything to me. I’m here to protect that history, to honor the people who built this place, and to make sure everyone who walks through these doors feels like they’ve come home. This isn’t just a business — it’s a heartbeat. And I’ll keep fighting for it, for Harrison, and for the good people who make this place what it is.

With Love,
Whitney
